Director Jon M. Chu discusses Crazy Rich Asians

A native New Yorker gets thrown for a loop after she meets her boyfriend’s impossibly wealthy family in Director Jon M. Chu’s new romantic comedy, Crazy Rich Asians.

Adapted from the global bestselling novel by Kevin Kwan, Chu’s film tells the story of Rachel (Constance Wu) an American-born Chinese economics professor, who travels to Singapore to accompany her boyfriend Nick (Henry Golding) to his best friend’s wedding. She soon discovers that Nick has been keeping a secret, he’s from a family that is so wealthy that he is considered one of the most eligible bachelors in Asia and a target for every single woman in his ultra-rarefied social class.

Following the DGA membership screening in Los Angeles on August 19, Chu sat down with Director Jon Turteltaub (The Meg) to discuss the making of Crazy Rich Asians, the first non-period, studio picture in over 25 years to feature an all-Asian cast. The Q&A was followed by a reception in the Guild’s Los Angeles Atrium hosted by the DGA Asian American Committee.

In addition to Crazy Rich Asians, Chu’s credits include the feature films Step Up 2: The Streets, G.I. Joe: Retaliation, Jem and the Holograms and Now You See Me 2; the feature documentaries Justin Bieber: Never Say Never and We the Economy: 20 Short Films You Can't Afford to Miss; and episodes of the television series The LXD: The Legion of Extraordinary Dancers. As a film student in 2002, Chu was recognized by the DGA's Student Film Awards for his short film Gwai Lo: The Little Foreigner. He has been a DGA member since 2007.
