Excerpt from DGA National Executive Director Jay D. Roth’s Presidents Award acceptance speech: “I learned a great deal about the DGA, its approach and philosophy, from Gil Cates and the leaders of his generation. This knowledge has served both the Guild and me well. Some basic, seemingly simple concepts became our commandments. Here are six:
  • First and foremost, we are here to do the business of the members.
  • Second, always know that the first question we ask internally at the DGA is: ‘What is the right thing to do?’
  • Third, a creative industry requires many collaborators, always understand that the industry sinks or swims together.
  • Fourth, good agreements are ones where both sides believe they succeeded.
  • Fifth, negotiate hard, be more prepared and expert than the other side in bargaining, and know their needs and proposals as well as you know you own.
  • Sixth and final, be prepared to fight when your bargaining ‘partner’ rejects the aforementioned commandments.
“I became Executive Director in 1995, and have done my best to run the Guild and our relationships according to these principles.”

I made a short with my brother Tony, who was 15, which unbeknownst to us was the ignition for both of us to become directors for our lifetime. But it would take awhile for me to make a real film. Even though that was a pretty good half hour movie for 65 quid, I’d be 40 years old before I made a movie. My advice to new directors is any decision is better than no decision. “So big thanks to the teams of talented people who helped me over the years, the great DPs, the editors, production designers, costume designers, musicians, and all those involved. They say ‘It takes a village.’ In my films now it takes a town. “I want to just say this DGA Award is the greatest of all awards for me. Thanks for inviting me to be a part of this exclusive membership.”
