On November 29, the Latino Committee meeting was preceded by Through Their Lens: DPs’ Incisive Look at Working with Directors & ADs, a discussion with Directors of Photography Armando Salas (The Terminal List), Abe Martinez (Obliterated) and Craig Kief (The Unicorn). In a conversation moderated by Director Steve Acevedo (All American: Homecoming), the panelists shared their insights, anecdotes and suggestions from their experiences working with DGA Directors and Assistant Directors on features and episodic projects. Martinez emphasized the the DP’s job to serve and magnify the voice of the Director and prioritizes communication in order to achieve that. Salas stressed the importance of knowing what sequences in the episode or film matter most, to boost an Assistant Directors’s scheduling success. Working primarily in comedy, Kief underscored the value of Assistant Directors who are organized but flexible.
