A year in the life of a middle-class family and their live-in housekeeper is chronicled in Director Alfonso Cuarón’s new semi-biographical drama, Roma.
Set in the early 1970s, Cuarón’s film recalls his own upbringing in the middle-class neighborhood of Roma in Mexico City, and serves as a love letter to the women who raised him during a time of of domestic strife and social hierarchy amidst political turmoil of the period. In addition to directing and writing, Cuarón also co-produced, co-edited and photographed the film.
Following the DGA membership screening in Los Angeles on November 4, Alfonso Cuarón sat down with Director Alejandro González Iñárritu (The Revenant), to discuss the making of Roma. He also spoke about the film in a conversation moderated by Director Kathryn Bigelow (Detroit) after the DGA membership screening in New York on November 11.
In addition to Roma, Alfonso Cuarón’s credits include the feature films Children of Men, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Y Tu Mamá También, Great Expectations, A Little Princess; and the pilot for the series Believe. He won the both the DGA Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Motion Pictures and the Oscar for Best Director for his 2013 feature Gravity. Alfonso Cuarón has been a DGA member since 1993.
