About the DGA Director Development Initiative Mentorship Program

The DGA has been providing programming focused on education, networking, career development and mentorship around episodic television directing through the Director Development Initiative. Since the program launched in 2016, numerous members have completed the program as Protégés, receiving invaluable learning and guidance from seasoned episodic Directors who support this program through volunteering in service to the preservation of the craft.

Location

The DGA facilitates a West Coast program in Los Angeles and an East Coast program in New York. Applicants are able to select the location they would like to participate in during the application process.

Eligibility

  • All DGA members are eligible to apply for the program under the following conditions:
  • Must be a member in good standing with the Guild;
  • May have no episodic television directing experience or have directed no more than three (3) episodes of episodic television;

Cost

The Mentorship Program is a free program supported by DGA members. Members selected to participate in the program are responsible for all costs related to their participation (i.e. gas, flights, etc.).

Application Process

  • Applicants will be asked to submit the following as a part of the application process:
  • Resume
  • Educational Background and/or training as it relates to directing
  • Compilation reel which should not exceed five (5) minutes
  • One (1) completed work sample that follows a traditional narrative structure
  • Sixty (60) second elevator pitch on why you should be selected for this program
  • A letter of recommendation

Through this eight-month program, DGA members who aspire to be episodic television Directors (protégés) are matched with experienced episodic television Directors (mentors).
