DGA Statement on the Passing of Director George Paul

Director George Paul (1928-2024)

Los Angeles – Directors Guild of America President Lesli Linka Glatter made the following statement upon learning of the passing of television Director George Paul, the fifth recipient of the DGA Award for Lifetime Achievement in News Direction (2007), and a member of the DGA National Board from 1963 – 1965:

“George Paul was a storied television news Director whose decades-long career set the standard for informing audiences the world over about life-changing events. A master storyteller, George directed impactful interviews and special reports with presidents, first ladies, entertainers, athletes, and other influential figures. His dedication to excellence also extended to the Guild where he served on our National Board, and in 2007 was honored with the DGA Award for Lifetime Achievement in News Direction for his contributions to his craft. George’s passion for excellence in news will continue to inspire new generations of directors about how to captivate and deliver compelling news broadcasts to the public. The DGA community shares our condolences with George’s loved ones at this time.”

George Paul worked on many of the most seminal news programs of the past century, including ABC’s 20/20, Good Morning America and Primetime and NBC’s Tomorrow Show and TODAY. He directed broadcasts for some of the most respected and recognized names in news including Barbara Walters, Diane Sawyer, Peter Jennings, Tom Brokaw, David Brinkley, Hugh Downs, Bryant Gumbel and Jane Pauley.
