DGA 2015-16 Episodic Television Diversity Report

  • Minor Improvement in Employer Hiring of Women and Ethnic Minority Directors
  • Report Includes New Analysis of Hiring Trends by Studio and Distribution Platform

LOS ANGELES – The Directors Guild of America today released its annual report analyzing the ethnicity and gender of directors hired to direct episodic television series across broadcast, basic cable, premium cable, and high-budget original series made for subscription video on demand (SVOD).  

More than 4,000 episodes produced in the 2015-2016 network television season and the 2015 cable television season from 299 scripted series were analyzed. The breakdown of those episodes by the gender and ethnicity of directors is as follows:

  • Women directed 17% of all episodes, a small increase from 16% the prior year.
  • Ethnic minorities (male and female) directed 19% of all episodes, representing a 1 percentage point increase over the prior year.

Report Highlights

  • The pie (total number of episodes) continues to grow – but the growth has slowed: There were 4,061 episodes in the 2015-2016 season – representing a 4% increase in total episodes since the 2014-2015 season (which grew 10% over the 2013-2014 season).
  • With that expansion came more directing jobs for all:
    • Women directed a total of 702 episodes – 84 more episodes than in the 2014-2015 season (a 14% increase). The total number of individual women directors employed in episodic television grew 23% to 183 (up from 149 in the 2014-2015 season).
    • Ethnic minorities directed 783 episodes – 89 more episodes than in the 2014-2015 season (a 13% increase).
    • And although the percentage of episodes directed by Caucasian males decreased to 67% (from 69% in the 2014-2015 season) – the actual number of episodes directed by Caucasian males went up slightly to 2,717 (from 2,714 the year prior).
  • The number of “Worst Of” series – series that hired women and minority directors for fewer than 15% of episodes – decreased 7% to 57 series. However, there were 30 series with 0% women or minority hires on the DGA’s “Worst Of” list – four more than in the 2014-2015 season.
  • The DGA’s “Best Of” list – series that hired women or minority directors for at least 40% of episodes – increased 28% to 73 series.

Analysis & Ranking of Television Studios

This report tracks employment by television studios (production), as opposed to networks (distribution). Hiring decisions are primarily made by studios – even when they share the same parent company as a network which may have some approval of those decisions. Moreover, many studios also produce series for outside networks, and some studios are not affiliated with a network.

To better understand the hiring patterns of the industry’s dominant players, the DGA analyzed the hiring statistics of the eight largest television studios and their subsidiaries. Combined, these entities oversaw the production of more than 75% of the episodes covered in this report.

Taking a look at the rankings in the table below, CBS, Twentieth Century Fox, NBC Universal and Disney/ABC held the top four spots in the hiring of diverse directors, with CBS leading the way. In the middle were Viacom (which lagged in the hiring of women directors) and Warner Bros. (which fell behind in the hiring of ethnic minority directors). Coming in last by a considerable margin were Sony and Home Box Office.

Breakdown by Distribution Platform

Breaking out the data by the four main distribution platforms – Broadcast, Basic Cable, Premium Cable and SVOD – series produced for Broadcast led the way in the hiring of women (20%) and ranked high in the hiring of ethnic minority directors (19%). Shows produced for Basic Cable ranked lowest in the hiring of women (14%) and highest in the hiring of minority directors (24%) – though it should be noted that nearly a quarter of all Basic Cable episodes directed by ethnic minority directors are attributed to a single director, Tyler Perry. Series produced for Premium Cable (e.g. HBO, Showtime) hired women to direct 15% of episodes, while just 10% of episodes were directed by ethnic minority directors.

While the number of total SVOD episodes (e.g. Netflix, Amazon and Hulu) grew 120% since last season – just 8% of SVOD episodes were directed by ethnic minority directors, and women directed 17% of episodes. It should be noted that there were nearly 1,800 Broadcast TV episodes, and more than 1,500 Basic Cable episodes – while Premium Cable and SVOD each had less than 400 episodes.

“These numbers shine a light on the lack of real progress by employers in this industry, plain and simple. Of particular concern is the precedent being set by the fastest-growing category, streaming video,” said DGA President Paris Barclay. “There’s a long road ahead for true change to be realized – because for that to happen, the pipeline will need to change at the point of entry. Employers will need to implement new hiring practices – from getting more people in the door and interviewing more diverse candidates, to hiring experienced directors instead of handing these jobs out as perks.”


Breakdown by Series

Out of 299 series examined, 57 (19%) hired women or minorities to direct fewer than 15% of episodes – 30 of which (10%) hired no women or minority directors at all – landing on the DGA’s “Worst Of” list (which can be found at the end of the report).

Several of those series made repeat appearances, having also placed on the “Worst Of“ list last year, including: Aquarius (13 episodes), Galavant (10 episodes), Henry Danger (19 episodes); It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia (10 episodes); Longmire (10 episodes); Man Seeking Woman (10 episodes); Marco Polo (11 episodes); Workaholics (10 episodes); Marvel’s Daredevil (13 episodes); Gotham (22 episodes); Ray Donovan (11 episodes); Ballers (10 episodes); The Librarians (10 episodes); Powers (10 episodes), Black Sails (9 episodes) and iZombie (15 episodes).

Several series that appeared on the “Worst Of” list this year and last year actually decreased their overall hiring of women and minority television directors including: Longmire (10% to 0%) Aquarius (8% to 0%), and Gotham (14% to 9%). Other series continued with the same hiring patterns and hired no women or minority directors (0%) this year and last year: Galavant, Henry Danger, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Man Seeking Woman, Marco Polo, and Workaholics.

It is worth noting that It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and Workaholics continue to bear the distinction of making the “Worst Of” list year after year, having hired no women or minority directors since their respective debuts in 2005 and 2011. Also, following the previous season of hiring no women or minority directors, Showtime’s Ray Donovan demonstrated only a slight improvement (0% to 9%), hiring a Caucasian woman to direct one episode – and once again landing on the “Worst Of” list.

Looking at the other side of the spectrum, 73 series, or 24% of all series examined, demonstrated a commitment to diverse hiring practices, hiring women or minorities to direct at least 40% of episodes. These shows are highlighted on the DGA’s “Best Of” list at the end of the report.

The following 25 television series – which appeared on last year’s “Best Of” list – once again made the list: Being Mary Jane; The Game; American Crime; Jane the Virgin; Black-ish; Last Man Standing; 12 Monkeys; Empire; Fresh Off the Boat; The Middle; Suits; Madam Secretary; Nicky, Ricky, Dicky & Dawn; Hit the Floor; Modern Family; The Odd Couple; Blue Bloods; The Fosters; Grimm; Nashville; Pretty Little Liars; Chicago PD; Criminal Minds; Homeland; and Girls.

It is worth noting that three series that were on last year’s “Worst Of” list made significant improvements – landing on this year’s “Best Of” list: Sleepy Hollow (11% to 44%), Marvel’s Agent Carter (12% to 40%), and K.C. Undercover (14% to 42%). Last Man Standing, which last year made the jump from the “Worst Of” to the “Best Of” list, once again demonstrated year-over-year improvement (41% to 73%).

Series that are primarily directed by one director for the entire season were included in the overall data, but are not singled out in the lists above. Similarly, foreign series shot abroad with a significant number of episodes that were not covered by a DGA agreement were also not included in the lists above, but the episodes that were made under a DGA agreement were included in the overall statistics. Examples of series that met either criteria include: Downton Abbey, The Knick, Louie, Mom, Narcos, Tyler Perry’s series on OWN (For Better or Worse, If Loving You is Wrong, Love Thy Neighbor, The Haves and Have Nots), and Undateable.

The DGA compiled the statistics in this report using information provided by production companies pursuant to the reporting requirements of its various collective bargaining agreements. Prior to publication, the DGA also requested verification of the statistics from each individual show or, if applicable, from labor relations representatives for each show. If a show or its labor relations representatives failed to verify a show's statistics, the DGA attempted to validate the show's statistics using its own and publicly available information. All figures in this report are rounded to the nearest percentage.



Appendix A – 2015-2016 In Comparison With Previous Year

Comparing figures for 2015-2016 with 2014-2015, this year’s report shows that:

  • The percentage of episodes directed by Caucasian males decreased from 69% to 67%;
  • The percentage of episodes directed by minority males increased from 15% to 16%;
  • The percentage of episodes directed by Caucasian females increased 13% to 14%; and
  • The percentage of episodes directed by minority females remained static at 3%.
