Los Angeles – DGA National Executive Director Jay D. Roth today announced that the DGA headquarters building on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles has received the elite silver LEED certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.
“I’m proud that the many green initiatives we’ve implemented at the DGA building have been recognized by this national benchmark for environmentally sensitive practices,” said Roth. “We’ve worked really hard and invested a lot of effort and resources into making our green practices among the best in the entertainment industry.”
LEED, which stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, is a stringent third-party certification program run by the U.S. Green Building Council that provides independent verification that a building meets the highest green building, performance and operation measures.
Over the past two years, the DGA has implemented a number of environmentally sensitive policies, programs and procedures along with energy improvement measures in a significant revamp of the facility’s operations. Among the new practices, the DGA has:
- Reduced water use in all plumbing fixtures by 46%;
- Enacted a recycling/solid waste management policy that will divert 42.5 tons of waste from landfills within a year;
- Achieved an Energy Star performance rating of 90;
- Reduced energy usage by 214,848 kWh from baseline over 2-year period;
- Incorporated plan for environmentally sensitive, low impact building exterior and hardscape management along with the associated grounds;
- Offset 62.5% of the building’s annual energy use with offsite renewable energy credits;
- Implemented sustainable purchasing policy;
- Reduced particulates in building air distribution systems through the use of high-efficiency filters that filter 80-85% of particulates in the air (as opposed to 60% in standard buildings);
- Developed green high performance cleaning policy program including the use of equipment that reduces building contaminants, minimizes environmental impact and meets the sustainable criteria under LEED protocol; 85% of all cleaning products and materials purchased and used in the building to be Green Certified; and incorporates indoor chemical and pollutant source control.
The DGA headquarters building also recently received the EPA’s ENERGY STAR certification, which indicates that the building is among the top 25% of similar buildings across the nation related to energy efficiency. The DGA’s average Energy Star performance rating of 90 puts the building in the top 10% of buildings in the United States.
