DGA Awards

January 31, 1997

DGA President Gene Reynolds and Awards Committee Chairman Howard Storm today announced that the Guild’s highest artistic award will be presented to legendary director Stanley Kubrick at the 49th Annual DGA Awards.

"The D.W. Griffith Award is the most prestigious artistic trophy given by the Directors Guild of America," Reynolds said. "In the judgment of a committee of ex-presidents, Stanley Kubrick is entitled to join the company of Orson Welles, David Lean, John Ford, Alfred Hitchcock, Elia Kazan, Akira Kurosawa and most recently, Woody Allen.

"Stanley Kubrick’s films, The Killing, Paths of Glory, Spartacus, Lolita, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Dr. Strangelove, A Clockwork Orange, Barry Lyndon, The Shining and Full Metal Jacket, all bear his unique, audacious, highly inventive and visual style. The Guild is proud to honor this outstanding filmmaker with its highest award," Reynolds said.

The 49th Annual DGA Awards will be held on March 8 at the Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles and at the Sheraton New York Hotel.
