DGA President Gene Reynolds today announced that distinguished associate director Larry Carl will receive the Guild's prestigious Franklin J. Schaffner Award for lifetime achievement by an associate director or stage manager at the 47th Annual DGA Awards on March 11.
Larry Carl served as an associate director at Washington's NBC O&O, WRC, from 1950 to 1988. He worked on many of the most historic news events of that period, including one of the Kennedy-Nixon debates in 1960, the death and funeral of President Kennedy, and the assassination of Malcolm X.
As pool A.D., Mr. Carl helped President Kennedy and Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy prepare for an October, 1963 press conference from the Oval Office. According to Mr. Carl, both Kennedys had ideas about how to shoot the conference, and they made revisions until a few minutes before air.
Mr. Carl has also worked extensively in sports, serving as a studio "mix" A.D. from 1963 through 1965 on a Sunday sports show which covered world-wide sports events. From the late 1960's through 1980, he coordinated many of the NBC feeds of NFL and AFC football games. During the 1970's, he worked on NBC's Monday through Friday mid-morning news with Nancy Dickerson.
As chairman of the Washington Coordinating Committee, Mr. Carl played a pivotal role in getting the news bureaus of CBS and ABC to become DGA signatories. He served as chairman for 30 years, from 1958 until 1988. During that same period, he was also an active participant in many contract negotiations and bargaining sessions.
Past Schaffner Achievement Award winners include Chester O'Brien, Mortimer O'Brien, Marilyn Jacobs-Furey, and James "Woody" Woodworth.
The DGA Awards will take be held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel on March 11. Arrivals are at 6:30 P.M.
