DGA Awards

February 17, 1995

DGA President Gene Reynolds today announced that distinguished sports documentary and film director Bud Greenspan will receive the fourth DGA Sports Award for Outstanding Lifetime Achievement at simultaneous bicoastal banquets celebrating the 47th Annual DGA Awards on March 11.

Greenspan will be honored in Los Angeles at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, and in New York at the Marriott Marquis Hotel as directors on both coasts gather to recognize outstanding directorial achievement in motion pictures and television.

In a directorial career that has spanned over 30 years, Bud Greenspan has celebrated the drama and the glory of all ranges of sporting events in his documentaries, series, and television movies. He is probably best known, though, for his films chronicling the Olympics. Lillehammer '94: 16 Days of Glory was the fifth Official Olympic Film he has directed. Others include films documenting the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics, the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, and the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. He also directed the 22 part Olympiad Series, which has aired in over 100 countries as well as on ABC, ESPN, and PBS.

Greenspan has won 3 Emmy Awards, 1 IDA Award, 1 Ace, and was awarded the "Olympic Order" by the International Olympic Committee for cinematic contribution furthering the Olympic Ideal. His highly acclaimed NBC movie of the week, Wilma, based on the life of Olympic Champion Wilma Rudolph, was one of the highest rated television films of the 1977 season.

Past Outstanding Lifetime Sports Achievement DGA winners include Doug Wilson, Harry Coyle, and Edward (Ted) Nathanson.
