On October 9, the DGA LGBTQ+ Committee’s online meeting featured the panel discussion, An Informational Panel on LGBTQ+ Healthcare Issues. Moderated by Director Alan Poul, the speakers included Directors Todd Holland and Emil Weinstein, 1st AD Marcos Gonzalez Palma, 2nd ADs Maggie Callis and Alex Schwerin and DGA General Counsel David B. Dreyfus.
Co-sponsored by the Proposals and Trans Subcommittees of the LGBTQ+ Committee, the informational panel focused on topics including Family Planning, Trans Health Care and Retirement issues, through the lens of LGBTQ+ members with firsthand experiences navigating the DGA Health Plan.
During the conversation, Holland discussed how the plans treat all members the same, with the basis of coverage being a diagnosis of medical necessity. Holland advised that the plans do not determine considerations of medical necessity, members must obtain those diagnoses from their doctors.
Following the discussion of each speaker’s personal experience navigating the DGA Health Plan, an extended Q&A portion followed, providing guidance and resources to the attendees.
