More than 150 DGA members seeking ways to better prepare for their next episodic directing assignment received valuable information on their Creative Rights and how the DGA can support them in securing them when the Director Development Initiative (DDI) hosted the conversational lab, Understanding the Director’s Creative Rights, on March 28.
The online event featured Director SJ Main Muñoz (Fear the Walking Dead and Latino Committee Co-Chair) in a conversation with DGA Associate Executive Director Daniel Tenkman that walked the attendees through the basics of Creative Rights in television directing, dispel common misconceptions around how these rights exist on set, and highlight recent changes negotiated in our current contract.
Muñoz and Tenkman covered topics including new rights around post-production, how to utilize DGA staff in supporting creative rights enforcement on set and how to navigate maintaining positive on set relationships while being able to implement your vision in the way our contract allows. The conversation underlined the importance of Directors utilizing post-production creative rights because of how that impacts the expectations of our collaborators for other Directors looking to exercise those rights in the future as well. Members were also encouraged to check out the Creative Rights checklist as a quick way of referencing their creative rights while working on a project.
