On January 16, the Women’s Steering Committee (WSC) meeting included the panel discussion, The AD to Director Transition, where Directors Anya K. Adams, Jessica Lowrey and Daniella Eisman shared how they made the jump from Assistant Director to Director in a conversation moderated by 1st AD/WSC Co-Chair Shawn Pipkin-West.
During the discussion, the panelists spoke about the advantages of having experience as an Assistant Director before taking on the job of a Director. They stressed the need to avoid stepping on the toes of their own ADs by trying to cover non-directorial duties and how that could lead to complicated conditions on the set. They also discussed the importance of centering the directorial role of getting the right shot and de-emphasizing making your day. They shared doubts expressed by colleagues as they were looking to move into directing and emphasized the importance of believing in yourself and pursuing your dreams despite other’s visions of your limitations. They encouraged others in the group to push forward, know who your allies are and test the waters as you make the transition to the Director’s chair.
