Director Luca Guadagnino discusses Bones and All

Two young people with unusual appetites meet and fall in love in Director Luca Guadagnino’s coming-of-age romantic horror feature, Bones and All.

Guadagnino’s film tells the story of Maren, a young woman on the margins of society and Lee, a disenfranchised drifter, who embark on an odyssey through the backroads of America and their own cannibalistic natures. However, despite their best efforts, all roads lead back to their terrifying pasts.

On November 20, after the DGA membership screening in Los Angeles, Guadagnino discussed the making of Bones and All during a Q&A moderated by Director John Krokidas (Kill Your Darlings).

During the conversation, Guadagnino spoke about immersing himself into middle America while researching locations for his film.

“I didn’t want to be driven by location management but actually of what I knew and understood throughout this immersion. So, we went from Nebraska to Minnesota and I was hit hard — and I am coming here with great respect and humbleness — by how much of the economic system of this country is cruel and how much it believes in the self-realization of the individual, which is sort of a false promise because society should exist. I saw so much disenfranchisement and I saw a lot of communities holding together despite the fact that a lot of these places have been abandoned by the industry and capital. It was all in between the wilderness which is powerful and which you can see in the movie.”

Guadagnino’s other directorial credits include the feature films Suspiria, Call Me by Your Name, A Bigger Splash, I Am Love and The Protagonists; the documentaries Salvatore: Shoemaker of Dreams and Bertolucci on Bertolucci; and episodes of the series We Are Who We Are.

Guadagnino has been a DGA member since 2021.
