Director Adele Lim discusses Joy Ride

July 8, 2023 A DGA Membership Screening Q&A in Los Angeles

Hilarity ensues when four women embark on an international adventure in Director Adele Lim’s comedy, Joy Ride.

Lim’s film tells the story of Audrey, Lolo, Kat and Deadeye, who experience bonding, friendship, belonging and wild debauchery while they travel through China in search of one of their birth mothers. Along the way they discover the universal truth of what it means to know and love who you are.

On July 8, after the DGA membership screening in Los Angeles, Lim discussed the making of Joy Ride during a Q&A moderated by Director Jason Ensler (Grilled).

During the conversation, she recalled the amazing support she got from her directorial team.

“This is my first directing gig. My 1st AD, Dave Klohn, could not have asked for a more supportive, thoughtful, just ‘in your corner’ guy. We’d have all these conversations. Sometimes it really does feel, even if you have supportive people in your corner, that everything’s stacked against you because of the schedule, because of the pace. So, you get as aggressive as you can be, but you need somebody to check you because you don’t wanna jump off that cliff and realize, ‘Oh my God. I pushed this too far. We’re not gonna get the scene. We’re not gonna get the shot.’ And Dave would always be the guy who’d check me.”

Joy Ride is Lim’s directorial debut. She joined the DGA in 2021.
