The UPM and the Changing Landscape of Production

On November 5, the UPM Committee of the Eastern AD/UPM Council held a virtual version of their annual UPM Breakfast. During this invitation-only event, Production Managers had an opportunity to learn from their fellows and ask questions during the online panel discussion, The UPM and the Changing Landscape of Production.

Following introductions by UPM Committee Co-Chairs Lynn Appelle, Leslie Gyson and Patricia Doherty Hess, Gyson led a discussion about the challenges of the “new normal” scope of projects, with productions seeming to grow more complicated and ambitious, and crew sizes expanding.

Doherty Hess then moderated a discussion about the process and timeline of hiring crew and the impact of a production boom on their availability, expectations, and experience levels.

Appelle turned the discussion to the subjects of working with human resources and accounting departments, with members sharing their experiences of navigating the evolving relationships and challenges of each.

Following the moderated topics, Assistant Executive Director Mary Hatch explained the latest changes in the unions’ Return to Work Agreement, and then the Co-chairs thanked the attendees and wrapped up the event.
