A Conversation with Director Benjamin Lobato

July 14, 2021 A DGA Latino Committee Virtual Event

On July 14, the Latino Committee’s meeting featured a conversation with Director Benjamin Lobato.

Moderated by Director Eli Gonda (Sid is Dead), Lobato discussed topics including his work as a Co-Executive Producer on Queen of the South, joining the Guild with his recent first episode as a Director, and Latino representation in the industry. Following the moderated portion of the event, he took questions from the online audience.

As the co-showrunner of Queen of the South, Lobato is one of the few Mexican-American showrunners working today. His directorial credits include the Queen of the South episode “Todo Lo Que Toco,” which was chosen to represent the series for Emmy consideration this year; as well as the short films Three Breaths, Stealing Home and Mariposa Canyon. Before beginning his career in television, he served as a Military Police Officer and a member of the Joint Counter-Narco-Terrorism Task Force. Lobato joined the DGA in 2021.

The Latino Committee was created as a networking group to advance career and job opportunities for Latino DGA members by improving craft skills, networking, and making Latinos better known to the Hollywood creative community.
