Director Miranda July discusses Kajillionaire

The relationships of a close-knit petty crime family becomes frayed when a stranger joins their schemes in Director Miranda July’s crime drama, Kajillionaire.

In July’s film, con-artists Theresa (Debra Winger) and Robert (Richard Jenkins) have spent 26 years training their only daughter, Old Dolio (Evan Rachel Wood), to swindle, scam, and steal at every opportunity. During a desperate, hastily conceived heist, they charm a stranger (Gina Rodriguez) into joining their next scam, only to have their entire world turned upside down.

On February 6, July discussed the making of Kajillionaire in a DGA Virtual Q&A moderated by Director Greta Gerwig (Little Women).

Admitting that she loved the editing process, July spoke about how she prefers to find her film over a period of time and effort.

“A phrase now I’ve had for years is, ‘build the brain.’ The process of editing is that you don't start out with a brain that knows the movie well enough to know what it means. Don't even freak out at the beginning because it's not on you, it's on the future person. You will build the brain by trying and failing again and again all these different variations until at the very end you're very smart about your movie.”

July’s other directorial credits include the feature films The Future and Me and You and Everyone We Know.

July has been a DGA member since 2018.
