Director John Lee discusses False Positive

June 27, 2021 A DGA Membership Screening Q&A in New York

A woman uncovers an unsettling truth about her fertility doctor in Director John Lee’s pregnancy horror movie, False Positive.

Lee’s film tells the story of Lucy (Ilana Glazer) and Adrian (Justin Theroux), who after months of trying and failing to get pregnant, believe they have found their dream doctor in the illustrious Dr. Hindle (Pierce Brosnan). But after becoming pregnant with a healthy baby girl, Lucy begins to notice something sinister through Hindle’s gleaming charm.

On June 27, after the DGA screening in New York, Lee discussed the making of False Positive in a Q&A moderated by Director Sarah-Violet Bliss (Fort Tilden).

During the discussion, Lee spoke about how his television directing experience helped him work around the challenges of shooting on a limited budget.

“You have to be practical or you’re just never going to actually get something done or you’re going to take five years to make something, which is a different sort of torture,” said Lee. “I think a lot of that does come from television which I think is a little bit more practical. You’re in New York City and there’s like 40 people who just won’t move. ‘Let’s shoot.’ Nope they’re they’re throwing a fit. ‘Okay, let’s change the scene.’ It’s just a real thing you have to do.”

Lee’s other directorial credits include the feature film Pee-wee’s Big Holiday; and episodes of Search Party, Broad City, Inside Amy Schumer, Wonder Showzen and Neon Joe, Werewolf Hunter. He has been a DGA member since 2010.
