A woman takes drastic measures to save herself and her child in Director Julia Hart’s crime-drama, I’m Your Woman.
Set in the 1970s, Hart’s film tells the story of Jean (Rachel Brosnahan), a woman who is forced to go on the run after her professional thief husband betrays his partners, sending her and her baby on a dangerous journey.
On February 17, Hart discussed the making of I’m Your Woman in a DGA Virtual Q&A moderated by Director Tayarisha Poe (Selah and the Spades).
During the conversation, Hart spoke about how she developed the color palette of the film. “Music and color are my two favorite things about filmmaking. I have a really amazing team. It’s so great when you find your crew family and you’re all vibing in the same way. Something I always do in prep is we have a color meeting with all my department heads and Gay Buckley, my Production Designer. She and the Art Department put up a photo essay of each location in story order and a lot of it is about color. It might just be a paint swatch just to talk about what the color of each of the places is and we walk through it with my DP, Costume Designer and Gay, our Production Designer, and oftentimes our Set Decorator too. We just walk through the whole movie and talk about the color.”
Hart’s other directorial credits include the feature films Stargirl, Fast Color and Miss Stevens.
Hart has been a DGA member since 2017.
