One of the hallmarks of the Guild has been the tradition of members getting together to share knowledge and improve their skills. Recently that tradition was continued in a series of meetings inspired by the DGA’s Directors Development Initiative Mentorship Program. With the coronavirus/COVID-19 pandemic curtailing the possibility of in-person gatherings, recently Directors Valerie Weiss (Outer Banks) and Allan Arkush (Another Life) coordinated an online seminar to cover the topic: The Impact of Wide-Angle vs Long Lenses in Narrative Storytelling and Point of View.
The seminar included Directors Mary Lou Belli (NCIS: New Orleans), Hanelle Culpepper (Star Trek: Picard), Roxann Dawson (Penny Dreadful: City of Angels), Lena Khan (Flora & Ulysses), Jessica Lowrey (Katy Keene), Viet Nguyen (Lucifer) and Bethany Rooney (Bull) in an online conversation moderated by Arkush and Weiss. The event was the continuation of previous sessions that included one on music in movies that were derived from an AFI course taught by Arkush.
