Directors Josh and Benny Safdie discuss Uncut Gems

December 15, 2019 DGA Q&As in New York and Los Angeles

A charismatic New York City jeweler makes a series of high-stakes bets that could lead to the windfall of a lifetime in Director Josh and Benny Safdie’s new comedic crime-drama, Uncut Gems.

The Safdie Brothers’ film tells the story of Howard Ratner (Adam Sandler), a charismatic New Yorker who is always on the lookout for the next big score. His latest scheme is a precarious high-wire act, balancing business, family, and encroaching adversaries on all sides, in his relentless pursuit of the ultimate win.

Following the DGA membership screening in New York on December 7, The Safdies sat down with Director Kenneth Lonergan (Manchester by the Sea) to discuss the making of Uncut Gems. They also discussed the film in a conversation moderated by Director Bo Burnham (Eighth Grade) following the DGA membership screening in Los Angeles on December 15.

In addition to Uncut Gems, The Safdie Brothers’ credits include the feature films Good Time, Heaven Knows What, Daddy Longlegs and The Pleasure of Being Robbed; and the documentary Lenny Cooke. They have been DGA members since 2018.
