Director Lynn Shelton discusses Sword of Trust

July 28, 2019 A DGA Q&A in Los Angeles

A woman’s inheritance from her deceased grandfather leads her down a rabbit hole of pawn shops and conspiracy theorists in Director Lynn Shelton’s new comedic-drama feature, Sword of Trust.

Shelton’s film tells the story of Cynthia (Jillian Bell) who travels with her friend Mary (Michaela Watkins) to collect Cynthia's inheritance, which turns out to be an antique sword that her deceased grandfather believed was proof that the South won the Civil War. To sell the sword, they team up with a cantankerous pawnshop owner (Marc Maron) and his man-child employee Nathaniel (Jon Bass), who’ve discovered there's a market for the relic as a rarefied 'prover item' and the ensuing adventure becomes a journey into the depths of conspiracy theories and Southern disillusionment.

Following the DGA membership screening in Los Angeles on July 28, Shelton sat down with Director Jake Kasdan (Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle) to discuss the making of Sword of Trust.

In addition to Sword of Trust, Shelton’s credits include the feature films Outside In, We Go Way Back, My Effortless Brilliance, Humpday, Your Sister's Sister, Touchy Feely, Laggies; and episodes of the series New Girl, The Mindy Project, Master of None, Casual, Fresh Off the Boat and GLOW. A DGA member since 2010, Shelton also serves on the Independent Directors Committee and the Television Creative Rights Committee.
