Director Ryan White discusses Ask Dr. Ruth

July 21, 2019 A Special Projects Documentary Series Screening

The story of America's favorite sex therapist is revealed in Director Ryan White's new documentary, Ask Dr. Ruth.

White's film chronicles the incredible life of Dr. Ruth Westheimer, the diminutive Holocaust survivor who became the nation’s most famous sex therapist. As she approaches her 90th birthday — showing no signs of slowing down —  Dr. Ruth revisits her painful past and unlikely path to a career at the forefront of the sexual revolution, which changed the conversation about sexuality as we know it through her late-night radio shows, television talk shows and teaching career at Columbia University.

Ask Dr. Ruth premiered at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival and won the Audience Award at the 2019 Calgary Underground Film Festival.

Following the DGA Special Projects Documentary Series screening in Los Angeles on July 21, White sat down with DGA Special Projects Documentary Series Subcommittee Co-Chair Ondi Timoner (Mapplethorpe) to discuss the making of Ask Dr. Ruth.

White’s other directorial credits include Pelada, Good Ol’ Freda, The Case Against 8, Serena and the Netflix docu-series, The Keepers, which won a 2018 Cinema Eye Honors Award.
