Director James Gray discusses Ad Astra

September 22, 2019 A DGA Q&A in Los Angeles

An astronaut travels into deep space to solve the mystery of his missing father’s doomed expedition in Director James Gray’s new sci-fi drama, Ad Astra.

Gray’s film tells the story of astronaut Roy McBride (Brad Pitt), who makes a daring voyage to Neptune to discover the truth about his father Clifford McBride (Tommy Lee Jones), the leader of a mission 30 years ago that was never heard from again. Roy's journey will unravel a mystery that challenges the nature of human existence and threatens the survival of our planet.

Following the DGA membership screening in Los Angeles on September 22, Gray sat down with Director Damien Chazelle (First Man) to discuss the challenges of making Ad Astra.

In addition to Ad Astra, Gray’s directorial credits include the feature films The Lost City of Z, The Immigrant, Two Lovers, We Own the Night, The Yards, Little Odessa; and an episode of the television series The Red Road. Gray has been a DGA member since 2001.
