Director Robert Eggers discusses The Lighthouse

October 20, 2019 DGA Q&As in New York and Los Angeles

Two men try to maintain their grip on reality while toiling on a remote and mysterious island in Director Robert Eggers’ new psychological thriller, The Lighthouse.

Set in 1890s New England, Eggers’ film tells the hallucinatory story of a grizzled veteran seaman named Thomas (Willem Dafoe) and a novice lighthouse keeper named Ephraim (Robert Pattinson), who are thrown together on a harsh assignment where isolation and alcohol begins to eat at their sanity to the point where they become threatened by their own nightmares.

Following the DGA membership screening in New York on October 16, Eggers sat down with Director Cory Finley (Bad Education) to discuss the making of The Lighthouse. Eggers also discussed the film in a conversation with Director Rian Johnson (Knives Out) following the DGA membership screening in Los Angeles on October 20.

In addition to The Lighthouse, Eggers’ credits include the feature film The Witch and the short films Brothers, The Tell-Tale Heart and Hansel and Gretel. Eggers became a DGA member in 2018.
