2019 Golf and Tennis Tournaments

144 golfers took to the links of the Wilshire Country Club on Monday, June 17 to show their generosity while having a great day at the 23rd Annual Directors Guild Foundation (DGF) Golf Tournament. At the same time, 34 tennis players were giving their all during the 16th Annual DGF Tennis Tournament, held around the corner at the Los Angeles Tennis Club, home of champions since 1921. Both events were fundraisers created to benefit the Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to assisting DGA members facing difficult times.

In his welcome during the award ceremony and dinner in banquet hall of the Wilshire Country Club – which was founded in 1919 and has hosted many great tournaments and groups such as the LA Open, the Senior PGA and the LPGA – DGF Chair Donald Petrie thanked all the players on behalf of himself, Golf Co-Chairs Michael Zinberg and Mel Damski, Tennis Co-Chairs Howard Storm and Gil Cates, Jr., and the Tournaments founding Godfather, former DGA National Executive Director and current Senior Advisor, Jay Roth.

Petrie then spoke about the work of the Foundation, which has been assisting members in need for nearly three quarters of a century.

“The Directors Guild Foundation was established by a group of Directors who wanted to help their fellow members when tough times hit, such as when a show is canceled or a contract ends but the bills don’t,” said Petrie. “The Foundation can help bridge the temporary situation by providing confidential and interest free loans, a tradition of generosity that has made a tangible difference in the lives of hundreds of DGA members. The Directors Foundation also supports the entertainment community by supporting the Los Angeles and New York Health Fairs hosted by the DGA and the DGA-Producer Pension and Health Plans and through contributions to the Motion Picture and Television Fund and the Actors Fund. This important work by the Foundation could not continue without your support today.”

The audience broke into applause when Petrie announced that due to their generosity and support of the day’s tournaments a record-breaking amount of more than $60,000 has been raised to benefit the Foundation. “On behalf of the Foundation Board and the many members the Foundation has assisted over the years…we thank you.”

Petrie then thanked the tournaments’ gold, silver and bronze sponsors and announced the raffle prize winners, before turning the proceedings over to Tennis Tournament Co-Chairs Gil Cates, Jr. and Howard Storm, who announced the winners and handed out the trophies for third, second and first place of the two flights of the tennis tournament. Then Golf Tournament Co-Chair and DGF Trustee Michael Zinberg spoke on behalf of himself and Golf Tournament Co-Chair Mel Damski in announcing the winners of the separate components of the Golf Tournament that included the “Closest to the Pin” and “Longest Drives Contests” and the second year of the test of short game skills, the “Putting Contest.” He concluded with the announcement of the winners of the Scramble golf tournament and invite all the players to return next year for the next Directors Guild Foundation Golf and Tennis tournaments which is scheduled for Monday, June 15, 2020.
