Director Ethan Hawke discusses Blaze

The life of country musician Blaze Foley is retold in Director Ethan Hawke’s new biographical drama, Blaze.

Adapted from Sybil Rosen’s memoir, Living in the Woods in a Tree: Remembering Blaze, Hawke’s film tells the story of the songwriting legend of the Texas outlaw music movement that spawned superstars like Merle Haggard and Willie Nelson. Weaving together three different time periods as re-imagined versions of Foley’s past, present and future, Blaze explores his love affair with Rosen; his last, dark night on earth; and the impact his songs and his death had on his fans, friends, and foes.

Following the DGA membership screening in New York on September 5, Hawke sat down with Director John Patrick Shanley (Doubt) to discuss the making of Blaze.

In addition to Blaze, Hawke’s credits include the feature films The Hottest State and Chelsea Walls; the documentary Seymour: An Introduction; and the short film Straight to One. He has been a DGA member since 2006.
