Director Lynn Shelton discusses Outside In

April 20, 2018 A DGA Q&A in Los Angeles

A man struggling with readjusting to life outside of prison, forms a complicated bond with his former high school teacher in Director Lynn Shelton’s new drama, Outside In.

Shelton’s film tells the story of Chris (Jay Duplass), a 38-year-old ex-con who is finally granted parole after having been behind bars since he was 18. His release is largely due to the tireless advocacy of his former high-school teacher Carol (Edie Falco) who was his supporter throughout his years of incarceration. After the two are reunited, Carol begins to realize Chris’ feelings for her have turned romantic, a situation complicated by the fact that she is married with a teen-aged daughter who has also befriended the awkward parolee.

Following the DGA membership screening in Los Angeles on April 20, Shelton sat down with Director Ava DuVernay (A Wrinkle in Time) to discuss the making of Outside In.

In addition to Outside In, Shelton’s credits include the feature films We Go Way Back, My Effortless Brilliance, Humpday, Your Sister's Sister, Touchy Feely, Laggies; and episodes of the series New Girl, The Mindy Project, Master of None, Casual, Fresh Off the Boat and Love. A DGA member since 2010, Shelton also serves on the Independent Directors Committee and the Television Creative Rights Committee.
