Director Greta Gerwig discusses Lady Bird

A teenage daughter and her mother struggle their way through their turbulent but loving relationship in Director Greta Gerwig’s new comedy, Lady Bird.

Gerwig’s film tells the story of Christine "Lady Bird" McPherson (Saoirse Ronan), a young woman coming of age amidst the economic chaos of 2002 in Northern California. Opinionated and strong-willed, "Lady Bird" often quarrels with her mother, Marion (Laurie Metcalf), an equally opinionated and strong-willed nurse struggling to keep her family afloat after her husband loses his job.

Following the DGA membership screening in Los Angeles on November 12, Gerwig sat down with Director Spike Jonze (Her) to discuss the making of Lady Bird. Gerwig also discussed the film in a conversation with Director Aaron Sorkin (Molly's Game) following the DGA membership screening in New York on November 19.

In addition to Lady Bird, Gerwig’s other feature directorial credit is the romantic drama Nights and Weekends (co-directed with Joe Swanberg). She has been a DGA member since 2015.
