Director Rian Johnson discusses Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi

December 17, 2017 A DGA Q&A in Los Angeles

The saga set a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away takes another step towards its ultimate resolution in Director Rian Johnson’s new sci-fi fantasy adventure, Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi.

In the second installment of the new trilogy kicked off by Director J.J. Abrams’ Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens, Johnson’s film continues the story of Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Rey, Finn, Kylo Ren and Chewbacca in their battle between the forces of good and evil for galactic control, as Rey develops her newly discovered abilities and the Resistance prepares to take on the First Order.

Following the DGA membership screening in Los Angeles on December 17, Johnson sat down with Director Spike Jonze (Her) to discuss the making of Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi and the challenges of stepping into such a beloved franchise.

In addition to Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi, Johnson’s credits include the feature films Looper, The Brothers Bloom and Brick; and episodes of the television series Terriers and Breaking Bad. He won the DGA Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Dramatic Series for his 2012 Breaking Bad episode “Fifty-One.” Johnson has been a DGA member since 2009.
