On Monday, June 19th, 124 golfers and 48 tennis players took part in the 21st Annual DGA Foundation Golf Tournament and the 14th Annual DGA Foundation Tennis Tournament. Both events were fundraisers created to benefit the Directors Guild Foundation (DGF), a non-profit organization dedicated to assisting DGA members facing difficult times.
The golf tournament and the awards reception were held at the Wilshire Country Club, which was founded in 1919 and has hosted many great tournaments and groups such as the LA Open, the Senior PGA and the LPGA. The tennis tournament took place right around the corner at the Los Angeles Tennis Club, home of champions since 1921.
In his welcome during the award ceremony and dinner in the Wilshire Country Club banquet hall, DGA Foundation Assistant Secretary and Golf Tournament Co-Chair Michael Zinberg thanked all the players on behalf of himself and his Golf Tournament Co-Chair Mel Damski and Tennis Co-Chairs Howard Storm and Gil Cates, Jr. Then he singled out the Tournaments founding Godfather, former National Executive Director, Jay Roth and gave a bit of background about how it all came to be. “For years my Co-Chair Mel Damski lobbied hard for a DGA Golf Tournament, to no avail. That all changed when Mel and Jay teamed up and… well, here we are.” Zinberg then took the opportunity to introduce Roth’s successor, new DGA National Executive Director Russell Hollander. Applauding Hollander’s more than 15 years of service to the DGA, Zinberg joked “but all we really care about is his golf score today.”
“As an Officer and Trustee of the Foundation, I am privileged to see the direct impact of our work to help fellow members in crisis," Zinberg continued. "This tradition of generosity has made a tangible difference in the lives of hundreds of DGA members.” He also pointed out that beyond the primary mission of assisting members in need, the DGF also supports the entertainment community through contributions to the Motion Picture and Television Fund and the Actors Fund then announced that due to the generosity of all involved in the tournaments $50,000 had been raised to benefit the Foundation. After thanking the tournaments’ gold, silver and bronze sponsors, Zinberg turned the proceedings over to Golf Tournament Co-Chair and Foundation Trustee Mel Damski.
Damski began the awards ceremony by announcing the raffle prize winners. Tennis Tournament Co-Chair and DGF Trustee Gil Cates, Jr. spoke on behalf of himself and Co-Chair Howard Storm and announced the winners of all three flights of the tennis tournament. Then Damski returned to announce the winners of the Scramble golf tournament and invite all the players to return next year for the 2018 DGA Foundation Golf and Tennis tournaments scheduled for Monday, June 18th.
