Seamless Visual Effects

On Saturday, November 1, 2008, members learned how to break down a visual effects sequence from concept to completion in the seminar Seamless Visual Effects, held in the Guild’s Los Angeles theatre complex.

The event used two visual effects sequences from Director Ridley Scott’s recently released thriller Body of Lies to demonstrate various techniques in the effects process including: two dimensional and three dimensional computer generated images, matte paintings, and multiple reconstruction and compositing of plates.

The seminar featured panelists who had all worked on the film: Sony Pictures Imageworks VFX Supervisor Sheena Duggal; Sony Pictures Imageworks VFX Producer Jacquie Barnbrook; Sony Pictures Imageworks CG Supervisor John Monos; Sony Pictures Imageworks Digital Producer Daniel Kuehn; Invisible Effects owner and operator Dick Edwards; and DGA UPM- members Charles J.D. Schlissel and L. Dean Jones.

UPM-member/DGA VFX/Digital Technology Committee Co-Chair Brian Frankish (Home of the Brave; Stuart Little) served as moderator.
