On Sunday, August 6, 2006 the DGA Special Projects Committee hosted a tribute to Guild Past President Arthur Hiller, featuring a screening of his 1964 Academy Award-nominated film, The Americanization of Emily.
DGA colleagues, Industry VIPs and creative collaborators gathered at the DGA Theatre Complex in Los Angeles to sing Hiller’s praises and recall having worked with him in a career that spans half a century. The speakers included DGA Past President Gene Reynolds; Director/producer Paul Mazursky (Taking Care of Business); Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Board of Governors member June Foray; actors Peter Falk and David Paymer (The In-Laws); cinematographers Victor Kemper (The Hospital) and David Walsh (Silver Streak); Turner Entertainment Company Former President Roger Mayer; actors Ali MacGraw and Ryan O’Neal (Love Story); and the star of The Americanization of Emily, Julie Andrews.
Hiller was nominated for the DGA Award for Love Story (1971) and is the recipient of the DGA’s Aldrich and Honorary Life Membership Awards, and has been a member of the DGA for exactly 50 years, having joined in 1956.
