Born in East Los Angeles and raised in the San Fernando Valley, Louis J. Horvitz initially did not intend to become a Director. Instead, he pursued a career in law while chasing his passion of car racing and rock n’ roll. It was at UCLA when he changed his major from prelaw to fine arts that he discovered another fascination, still photography. After earning his bachelor’s and master’s degrees, Horvitz sought work as a camera operator at local television stations and was hired by noted live television directors, including Marty Pasetta and Don Mischer, as a camera operator. Learning much from their schools of thought, Horvitz was eventually offered the chance to direct, beginning a long and successful career in the live television event space.
In a career that spans over five decades, Horvitz has directed hundreds of specials and variety series, including the Academy Awards, Primetime Emmy Awards, Grammy Awards, Golden Globe Awards, AFI Life Achievement Award, The Kennedy Center Honors, Paul Simon in Central Park, The Rolling Stones Steel Wheels Tour, Live Aid, and Solid Gold.
Horvitz has been nominated for 19 DGA Awards, winning Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Variety/Talk/News/Sports - Specials for The 60th Grammy Awards as well as winning Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Musical Variety for The Kennedy Center Honors.
He has been a member since 1974.
