Leon Robinson was born in Los Angeles, California in 1948. Since he was very young, he found himself involved in the stage crew, joining his school’s theater programs throughout most of his time in primary school. Later he would attend California State University, Los Angeles for film and television production, from which much of his formal training would originate. There he would make a connection which would lead him to a position at KTLA, jumpstarting his professional career and where he would remain for the next 9 years. A friendship made at KTLA would lead him to pursuing DGA membership, becoming a Stage Manager.
Robinson’s portfolio includes work on sitcoms including: In Living Color, Family Matters, The Redd Foxx Show, Happy Birthday Hollywood, Sinbad & Friends, Half & Half as well as variety shows and specials including the Grammys, NAACP Image Awards and MTV Video Music Awards, among many others. He’s worked with leading directors including Jeff Margolis, Hamish Hamilton and Louis J. Horvitz, and has also held 1st and 2nd AD roles. His experience in the industry has given him insight into the importance of representation on and off camera, a wealth of knowledge on methods to a successful set, and numerous lifelong personal connections with those he’s worked with. Robinson’s life and career was enriched through his marriage to Stage Manager, Associate Director, and Director Terri McCoy. In their 43 years together, they would provide support for each other throughout their personal and professional lives, both on set and in the advancement of their careers.
Robinson has been a member of the Director’s Guild since 1985.
