Interviewed by: Michael Peyser

Veteran unit production manager Ezra Swerdlow discusses his 30-plus-year career working with directors Woody Allen (Stardust Memories, Zelig, Hannah and Her Sisters), Frank Oz (The Muppets Take Manhattan), Mel Brooks (Spaceballs) and Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland).

On Creating a Production Plan

UPM Ezra Swerdlow considers the important elements of creating a production plan and describes how the method he learned when he first started his career (called a strip board) continues to help him visualize a schedule for a film.

On Effective UPMs

Swerdlow believes that understanding the needs and considerations of the story and key crew members like cinematographers and production designers allows a unit production manager to be more effective.

Most Challenging Moment

Swerdlow describes the dance number in Enchanted as one of the proudest and most challenging moments in his career, a sequence that included 200 dancers and five different locations within New York’s Central Park.
