Well known for his portrayal of Officer Andy Renko on Hill Street Blues, Charles Haid earned his BFA in directing and theatrical production at Carnegie Mellon University and steadily worked in theater throughout the 1970s as an actor, director and as an assistant to Alan Schneider. After finding critical success as an actor in the series Delvecchio and Hill Street Blues, both produced by Steven Bochco, Haid transitioned to directing with an episode of Doogie Howser, M.D. in 1990.
Since 1990, Haid has gone on to direct numerous episodes, including Cop Rock, NYPD Blue, ER, Third Watch, Nip/Tuck, Breaking Bad and Criminal Minds; pilots Murder One, High Incident, Buddy Faro and Threat Matrix; movies for television Cooperstown (1993), Riders of the Purple Sage (1996), Buffalo Soldiers (1997) and Sally Hemings: An American Scandal (2000); and a feature film, Iron Will (1994), all while maintaining a successful acting career.
For his directorial efforts, Haid received four DGA Awards nominations for Buffalo Soldiers, Murder One, NYPD Blue and ER, winning for ER in 1994. He has additionally garnered two Primetime Emmy Awards nominations for his work on Murder One and NYPD Blue.
Haid served on the Western Directors Council from 2001 to 2003 and on the Television Creative Rights Committee from 2001 to 2014. He has been a Guild member since 1989.
