Barbara Kopple is a director best known for her work on documentaries. Her first documentary, Winter Solider, was released in 1972. For her directorial efforts, Kopple has won the DGA Documentary Award twice, in 1992 for American Dream and in 1994 for Fallen Champ: The Untold Story of Mike Tyson. She also won the DGA Dramatic Series Award in 1998 for an episode of Homicide: Life on the Street. Kopple has also won two Academy Awards for Best Documentary, for Harlan County, USA in 1977 and American Dream in 1991. Kopple served on the DGA’s Eastern Directors Council from 1982-84.
