Matt Haggerty

Have Expertise, Will Travel

BY BRANDON KYLE GOCO

Given the nature of his job, 2nd AD Matt Haggerty always has his passport ready. "I've definitely had the opportunity to travel the world and go to places I didn't even know existed," says Haggerty, who recently wrapped production in Cambodia on First They Killed My Father and is just about to head back to Scotland for Avengers: Infinity War.

Traveling to the far reaches of the planet often has its challenges, particularly when it comes to communicating on set. "It's getting there, learning to adapt, and figuring out how to approach speaking to some of the crew, or the crowd, or even the public," says Haggerty. "With the language barrier you just have to get a little creative."

Effective communication also plays a role in setting the background. "With the extras, we're normally the only conduit of information that goes to them," says Haggerty, "The more information they have, the better they can do to make the best film that we can."

Whether shooting on a distant location or just 70 miles north of L.A. (on Doug Liman's The Wall), Haggerty always keeps safety on set in mind. "Be patient," he advises. "If you're patient and try anticipating instead of reacting, the day will go a lot smoother."
