Elia Kazan accepted his award with the comment that he is not ordinarily a joiner, but joining the Directors Guild was the best, happiest, and proudest thing he had ever done. He also cited the three ages of man in show business: "You’re young, you’re old and ’Gee, you’re looking swell.’"
