In March 1996, the DGA signed an agreement with SACEM (France’s Society of Authors, Composers and Publishers of Music) the Writers Guild of America (WGA), followed later by the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), entering into a partnership with the goal of creating a common cultural fund to be used in promoting and teaching the art of filmmaking in their respective countries. The fund organizes meetings of French and American film professionals, works to preserve the cinematic heritage of the U.S. and France through film restoration, and promotes French cinema in the U.S. One of the activities of the Fund, the COLCOA French Film Festival held each spring at the DGA theaters in Los Angeles, is now the largest festival of French films outside of France. The DGA members of the Franco-American Cultural Fund’s Board are Taylor Hackford, Michael Mann, and Jay D. Roth.
