Directing Intimacy - A Focus on Women Committee Event

Directing Intimacy

June 28, 2023 A Focus on Women Committee Virtual Event

On June 28, the Focus on Women Committee’s (FOWC) virtual meeting featured Director Rachel Raimist with a scaled down version of her Masterclass in Directing Intimacy. The class is an intensive online workshop that takes a deep dive into the process of prepping and directing intimacy and simulated sex scenes that has been taught at the Sundance Collab.

In a conversation moderated by Director Nora Gerard (CBS News), Raimist led the attendees through topics such as securing actor consent, privacy garments, working with an intimacy coordinator and language to use while directing intimate scenes.

Dr. Raimist is a formerly tenured college professor whose directorial credits include episodes of The Spiderwick Chronicles, Up Here, Sex/Life, The Sex Lives of College Girls, Wu-Tang: An American Saga, Fantasy Island, Diary of A Future President, and others. She holds a B.A. and a M.F.A. in Directing from the UCLA School of Film and Television and a M.A. in Women’s Studies and a Ph.D. in Feminist Studies from the University of Minnesota. A DGA member since 2018, Raimist currently serves as a Co-Chair of the new provisional Disability Committee, the Alternate Co-Chair of the Latino Committee, on the leadership team of the Women’s Steering Committee Squad and on the Special Projects Committee.

About the Committee:

Originally a sub-committee of the Eastern Directors Council, in 2020 the Focus on Women Committee (FOWC) was designated an official and permanent committee of the DGA National Board for women members residing in the Eastern Region. The Committee would like to remind members that while their events are designed with a special focus on women Directors, all DGA members are welcome to attend.
